HEX to CMYK Converter
A HEX to CMYK converter turns a web color code into print ink percentages. For example, #FE5000 becomes CMYK 0/69/100/0 — an orange. The conversion runs HEX → RGB → CMYK, which is a chained approximation: the result is a starting point for print, not a final spec. Real output depends on the printer’s ICC profile, ink set, and paper.
What is HEX to CMYK conversion?
HEX is a six-digit hexadecimal notation for sRGB colors used throughout web design. It encodes three 8-bit channels — red, green, blue — as a compact string like #FF5000. It exists purely for convenience; the browser decodes it to RGB before painting anything on screen.
CMYK is a four-channel subtractive color model used by print presses. Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks are laid down on paper, and the eye perceives the wavelengths that are not absorbed. Values are percentages from 0 to 100 per channel. Zero ink on white paper means no absorption, which reads as white; full coverage means near-total absorption, which reads as black.
Converting HEX to CMYK is fundamentally a game of translation between two different media. Screens emit light; paper reflects it. The color you see on a monitor and the color printed on paper will never match exactly — the best you can do is approximate, then verify with a physical proof. The formula on this page gives the standard mathematical approximation; production work uses ICC profiles for accurate conversion.
How to use this converter
- Type or paste a HEX code in the input field, with or without the leading
#. - Or click the color picker to choose visually — the HEX field updates automatically.
- Read the CMYK result: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black percentages on a 0–100 scale.
- Click Copy to grab a clean CMYK string for a design file, print brief, or printer email.
How the conversion works technically
The conversion runs in two stages. First, HEX → RGB: parse the six hex digits as three pairs and convert each pair from base 16 to base 10. #FE5000 means red = FE hex = 254, green = 50 hex = 80, blue = 00 hex = 0.
Second, RGB → CMYK. Compute black as K = 1 − max(R, G, B) / 255. Then compute each ink as C = (1 − R/255 − K) / (1 − K), and the same for M with G and Y with B. Multiply by 100 to get percentages.
Working the example. #FE5000 → rgb(254, 80, 0). max = 254, so K = 1 − 254/255 = 0.0039 → 0% after rounding. C = (1 − 254/255 − 0) / 1 = 0.0039 → 0%. M = (1 − 80/255 − 0) / 1 = 0.686 → 69%. Y = (1 − 0 − 0) / 1 = 1 → 100%. Result: CMYK 0/69/100/0. That matches Pantone Orange 021 C’s print value.
Accuracy and limitations
The chained formula is mathematically clean but physically optimistic. It assumes perfect inks on ideal paper with no dot gain, no ink absorption, no overprint interaction, and no press calibration variance. Real printers adjust every one of those factors, which is why two printers given CMYK 0/69/100/0 will produce slightly different oranges on the same stock.
For production work, always convert HEX to CMYK through the printer’s ICC profile — FOGRA39 for European coated stock, GRACoL for US coated, or the specific profile the printer provides. This page uses the standard naive formula so you can see the approximate translation, and so the numbers you get match what Adobe and CSS conversions would produce. It is not a substitute for the printer’s conversion.
The most common surprise is gamut loss. Saturated screen colors — electric blues, pure greens, neon pinks — are outside CMYK’s gamut and will come back muted. That is not a bug in the converter; it is a physical limit of four-ink printing. If color fidelity for those ranges matters, consider spot colors (Pantone) rather than CMYK process.
Use cases
- Brand guideline dual-spec. A brand with a HEX primary color often needs a matching CMYK value for print collateral — this conversion provides the starting point.
- Web-to-print packaging. Product packaging designed in HEX but printed in CMYK needs conversions that preserve visual identity across media.
- Mockup previews. Before committing to print, converting HEX to CMYK shows whether a color will shift dramatically in production.
- Print spec sheets. Handing off web assets to a print designer is smoother when both HEX and CMYK values are provided.
- Gamut analysis. Comparing HEX to CMYK reveals which brand colors will need spot inks to survive in print.
Common mistakes
- Shipping the naive CMYK to a printer — always re-convert via the printer’s ICC profile.
- Expecting print to match screen — the two media are physically different and never match exactly.
- Using three-digit shorthand like
#FE5(which expands to #FFEE55, not #FE5000) — expand first, then convert. - Assuming the conversion is reversible — round-tripping HEX → CMYK → HEX usually returns a slightly different HEX.
- Ignoring paper stock — the same CMYK values print differently on coated vs uncoated paper, and differently again on matte vs gloss.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert HEX to CMYK?
Convert HEX to RGB first by parsing each color pair as a hexadecimal number, then apply the RGB-to-CMYK formula: K = 1 − max(R, G, B) / 255, and C = (1 − R/255 − K) / (1 − K) for each ink. For example #FE5000 becomes CMYK 0/69/100/0.
Is HEX to CMYK conversion exact?
No. HEX describes an sRGB screen color; CMYK describes print ink coverage. Every HEX value maps to one RGB triplet, which maps to one CMYK approximation — but that approximation is not what a specific printer will actually output. Real print results depend on ink, paper, press, and ICC profile.
Why do HEX colors look duller in CMYK?
CMYK has a smaller gamut than RGB. Saturated screen colors — bright greens, vivid cyans, neon oranges — cannot be reproduced with four inks on paper. The conversion returns the closest CMYK the printing process can produce, which is necessarily muted compared to the original screen color.
What HEX values become CMYK pure black?
Only #000000. It converts to RGB 0/0/0, then to CMYK 0/0/0/100 — the standard black plate. Very dark colors like #0A0A0A produce near-black CMYK like 0/0/0/96, which prints as a very dark gray rather than pure black.
Should I use HEX or CMYK in CSS?
CSS uses RGB-family notation (HEX, rgb, hsl) — not CMYK. For screen work, use HEX. For print collateral, use CMYK in your design file. When handoff requires both, convert HEX to CMYK for the print spec, then verify with the printer’s proof.
