What is Pantone to RGB conversion?
Pantone is a print specification system. Its Solid Coated colors are physical ink mixes applied to paper, and each Pantone code refers to a numbered ink that printers order ready-made. RGB is the additive color model that screens actually use: three channels of emitted light (red, green, blue) combined to produce every visible color. RGB is the underlying color model of every browser, every phone display, and every camera sensor.
Converting Pantone to RGB means translating from a physical print standard to the digital color model that screens work in. The RGB triplet you get is the closest digital approximation of the physical Pantone swatch. It is not exact because Pantone inks reflect light while RGB screens emit light, and the Pantone print gamut and the sRGB screen gamut overlap but are not identical. For most brand colors the RGB approximation is close enough for digital use; for wide-gamut Pantone colors the RGB is muted compared to the physical ink.
Designers need Pantone to RGB conversion whenever a color was specified in Pantone for print but must appear in digital form. Browsers, canvas, WebGL, image processing, and data visualization all operate on RGB triplets directly, not HEX strings, not Pantone codes. Converting to RGB is the step that makes a Pantone color usable in code.
How to use this converter
- Open the dropdown above and search or scroll to find any Pantone Solid Coated color by name or code number.
- The selected Pantone color is displayed as a swatch with its RGB triplet, HEX approximation, CMYK print values, and LAB coordinates below.
- Click Copy RGB to copy the triplet (or Copy CSS to copy the rgb() string) for pasting into JavaScript, CSS, or your design tool.
- Click the View full page link to open the Pantone color page with closest neighbors and cross-system references.
The RGB triplet is what you would use in JavaScript, canvas, or any code that manipulates colors numerically. The HEX approximation is what you would use in CSS or a design tool picker. Both describe the same color. The CMYK values are useful when the target format expects print values. The LAB coordinates are useful for color-managed workflows and perceptual color difference calculations.
How the conversion works technically
The Pantone catalog stores each color as RGB values derived from the most widely published approximations of the corresponding ink. The RGB triplet is the primary representation. HEX is a base-16 encoding of the same triplet. CMYK follows the standard print approximation formula. LAB runs RGB through the sRGB gamma curve to linear light, then multiplies by the standard sRGB to XYZ matrix, then applies the CIE D65 white point transformation.
Each of these derived values describes the same underlying RGB triplet in a different notation or color model. None is authoritative on its own: they are all approximations of the same physical Pantone ink. The Pantone catalog on this site uses the most commonly published approximations, cross-referenced across multiple sources and physical chip photography where available.
In a browser, the RGB triplet is the actual value that gets rendered. HEX strings, HSL values, and named CSS colors all convert to RGB internally before painting pixels. If you need to manipulate a color in code (blend two colors, adjust brightness, compute contrast), RGB is the format the operations work on, even if the input was written as HEX.
Accuracy and limitations
Every RGB value on this page is an approximation. Pantone does not publish official RGB values for its Solid Coated colors, because those colors are physical inks. The values here are the most commonly cited digital translations, and different sources disagree by 1 to 3 percent for the same code. For most design and branding work, that level of precision is fine. For print production, no RGB value can substitute for a physical Pantone chip.
Two caveats matter. First, wide-gamut Pantone colors (very saturated greens, electric cyans, vivid magentas) fall outside the sRGB gamut, and the RGB values shown are the closest sRGB approximation, visibly less saturated than the physical ink. Second, the RGB value assumes the Solid Coated (C) version of the Pantone code. If your print job uses Solid Uncoated (U), the physical printed color will be lighter and warmer than the RGB value suggests.
Use cases
- JavaScript and canvas. Canvas drawing, chart libraries, and WebGL shaders all expect RGB triplets. Converting a brand Pantone to RGB lets you render it programmatically.
- Data visualization. Chart libraries like D3, Chart.js, and Recharts accept RGB or HEX. When brand colors come from a Pantone-based design system, this converter turns them into usable chart color values.
- Color manipulation in code. If you need to compute a hover state, blend two colors, calculate contrast ratios, or adjust brightness, RGB is the format the math operates on.
- CSS as rgb(). CSS supports both rgb() and rgba(). For brand colors with alpha transparency, the rgb() format is often more readable than the eight-digit HEX form (#RRGGBBAA).
- Image processing. Python, Rust, and JavaScript image-processing libraries work on RGB pixel arrays. Converting a brand Pantone to RGB makes it usable in image compositing and generative art.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the RGB value is exact. RGB is the closest digital approximation of a physical Pantone ink. The physical ink and the digital RGB will never match exactly because the media are different.
- Using RGB for print production. Never hand an RGB value to a printer as a print specification. Print requires a Pantone code, CMYK build, or ICC profile. RGB is a screen format; it is not a print format.
- Forgetting that RGB is sRGB here. The RGB values on this site assume the sRGB color space, which is the web standard. If your target device or workflow uses a wider gamut like Display P3, the same numeric triplet produces a different perceived color.
- Mixing coated and uncoated RGB values. The RGB for Pantone 485 C and the RGB for Pantone 485 U are different. If your print job uses uncoated paper but you use the coated RGB on the web, the two versions of the brand will drift apart.
- Ignoring display calibration. The RGB value is correct regardless of monitor, but what you see depends on your display. Two designers on two machines will see slightly different versions of the same RGB triplet.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert Pantone to RGB?+
Select a Pantone Solid Coated color from the dropdown above. The converter shows the RGB triplet for that Pantone color, alongside its HEX approximation, CMYK print values, and LAB coordinates. The RGB triplet can be copied as three separate channel values or as a CSS-ready rgb() string.
What is the difference between Pantone to RGB and Pantone to HEX?+
They return the same color in different formats. RGB is three decimal integers (like 228, 0, 43), HEX is a base-16 string (like #E4002B). Both describe the same sRGB color. Use RGB when the target needs separate channel values (JavaScript, canvas, WebGL, data analysis). Use HEX when the target expects a string color (CSS, SVG attributes, design tool pickers).
Why does the RGB value matter when HEX is shorter?+
Because RGB is the underlying color model. HEX is a notation for RGB: the browser converts every HEX value to RGB internally before rendering. In JavaScript, canvas drawing, WebGL shaders, and most image processing libraries, colors are handled as RGB triplets, not HEX strings. If your code needs to manipulate the color (adjust brightness, blend two colors, compute contrast), RGB is the format it expects.
Is Pantone to RGB conversion exact?+
No. Pantone colors are physical inks, and RGB is a screen color model. No RGB triplet corresponds exactly to any Pantone ink because the Pantone print gamut and the sRGB screen gamut are different. The RGB values shown are the most widely published digital approximations, close enough for design and web work but not exact print specifications.
What does the RGB triplet represent?+
The RGB triplet is three integers, each from 0 to 255, representing the red, green, and blue channel values of the corresponding screen color. The browser mixes these three channels additively to produce the perceived color. All three at 0 is black; all three at 255 is white. The triplet describes the same sRGB color as the HEX approximation, just in a different notation.
Can I use RGB values in CSS directly?+
Yes. CSS supports both rgb() and rgba() functions. rgb(228, 0, 43) is valid CSS and is equivalent to #E4002B. rgba() adds a fourth alpha channel from 0 to 1. For static brand colors where opacity is not needed, HEX and rgb() produce identical visual results. Use whichever format is more convenient for your codebase.
Which Pantone colors are included?+
This converter covers the full Solid Coated (C) library, which is 2,371 colors in this catalog. Solid Uncoated (U), Fashion Home + Interiors (TCX), and Plastics are separate Pantone libraries with separate codes, and their RGB approximations differ from the coated values shown here.
Why do the RGB values sometimes look muted compared to what I expect?+
Because some Pantone colors fall outside the sRGB gamut. Wide-gamut colors like very saturated greens, electric cyans, and vivid magentas exist in the physical Pantone print space but cannot be reproduced by any sRGB color. The RGB value shown is the closest sRGB approximation, which is visibly less saturated than the physical ink. For critical digital brand representation, consider a wider gamut like Display P3, which contains more of the Pantone spectrum.
