What is RGB to Pantone conversion?

RGB is an additive color model used for screens. It represents color as three independent channels of light (red, green, blue), each ranging from 0 to 255. Combine all three at maximum and you get white light; turn them all to 0 and you get black. Screens emit light directly, which is why RGB is the natural color model for displays, cameras, and web browsers.

Pantone is a print specification system. Its Solid Coated colors are physical ink mixes applied to paper and reflect light rather than emit it. Each Pantone code corresponds to a numbered ink that a printer orders ready-made, ensuring consistency across presses and production runs. Pantone codes describe an exact physical product; RGB codes describe an exact digital signal.

Converting RGB to Pantone bridges these two media. Every RGB triplet maps to one approximate Pantone match, but that match is a perceptual approximation rather than an exact correspondence. The closest match depends on which algorithm the converter uses, and Delta E 2000 produces the most accurate results because it operates in a perceptually uniform color space.

How to use this converter

  1. Enter red, green, and blue values from 0 to 255 in the three input fields above.
  2. Or click the color picker to choose a color visually. The RGB fields update automatically.
  3. The converter computes Delta E 2000 against all 2,371 Pantone Solid Coated colors and ranks matches by perceptual similarity.
  4. Click any result to open the full Pantone color page with HEX, RGB, CMYK, LAB values and closest neighbors.

The top result is the closest perceptual match. The next seven are progressively more distant alternatives, useful when the top match falls outside the print gamut or when you want to see options in nearby hue regions. Click any result to open its full Pantone page with HEX, RGB, CMYK, and LAB values.

How the match works technically

The RGB triplet is normalized to 0-1, de-gamma-corrected to linear sRGB, and converted to XYZ using the sRGB standard matrix. XYZ converts to CIELAB using the D65 white point. Delta E 2000 is then computed between the input LAB and the LAB of each Pantone color in the catalog. The lowest Delta E is the closest perceptual match.

Delta E 2000 is the current CIE standard for perceptual color difference, published in 2000 as a refinement over the earlier Delta E 1976 metric. It weights lightness, chroma, and hue according to human visual sensitivity, and adjusts for regional non-uniformities in CIELAB. A Delta E of 3 in the blue region and a Delta E of 3 in the yellow region correspond to roughly the same perceived difference. The older Delta E 1976 does not have this property, which is why many competitor converters produce visibly wrong matches for saturated colors.

The similarity score shown next to each result is a linear mapping of Delta E. A Delta E of 0 displays as 100 percent. Each Delta E unit reduces the score by about 5 percentage points. At Delta E 20 the score reaches 0. The score is a design reference, not a production guarantee. Delta E under 3 is typically close enough for design work; under 1 is required for critical brand matching.

Accuracy and limitations

Every RGB to Pantone conversion is an approximation by definition. RGB describes emitted light, Pantone describes reflected ink. No conversion formula bridges that gap exactly. The best match returns the closest available Pantone, but the actual printed result depends on paper stock, press calibration, ink set, varnish, and lighting conditions.

Three ranges are particularly prone to distant matches. First, very saturated RGB colors (pure green, vivid cyan, electric magenta) fall outside the Pantone print gamut, so no Pantone match exists closer than Delta E 8 to 15. Second, very light or very dark colors have sparse coverage in the Solid Coated library. Third, RGB values themselves are ambiguous if they come from a wide-gamut color space like Display P3 or Adobe RGB, because those spaces contain colors that sRGB cannot represent. This converter assumes sRGB, which covers most web and consumer content.

Use cases

  • Web-to-print workflows. Designers working with RGB values from Figma, CSS, or a design system need Pantone equivalents for the print materials that accompany the digital product.
  • Brand identity development. Brands often start with RGB or HEX codes for digital touchpoints. Converting to Pantone provides a print-side specification for brand guidelines, packaging, and physical collateral.
  • Programmatic color work. Applications that compute RGB values at runtime (data visualization, generative design, brand-customizable UIs) need to translate the resulting colors into Pantone for any print output.
  • Design system documentation. Modern design systems often store brand colors as RGB. Adding the Pantone equivalent to each token gives print teams a starting point without a round-trip to the designer.
  • Cross-media brand consistency. Products that appear both on-screen (apps, websites, digital signage) and on physical materials (packaging, uniforms, printed collateral) require a Pantone specification alongside the RGB one.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing color spaces. RGB values from Adobe RGB or Display P3 contain colors that sRGB cannot represent. If your RGB values came from a wide-gamut workflow, converting them as if they were sRGB produces an incorrect match.
  • Trusting the top match without verification. A Delta E of 5 means the colors are visibly different when placed side by side. For critical brand work, get a physical chip and compare under neutral lighting.
  • Assuming coated and uncoated are interchangeable. This converter matches against Solid Coated only. Printing the result on uncoated paper produces a lighter, warmer, less saturated color.
  • Ignoring the gamut. Bright cyans, vivid greens, and electric magentas often fall outside the Pantone print gamut. No Pantone code will match these colors closely.
  • Confusing RGB ranges with Pantone ranges. RGB runs 0-255 per channel; Pantone codes are numbered inks with no numeric relationship. There is no such thing as an RGB equivalent of "Pantone 485" without first passing through a color space conversion.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert RGB to Pantone?+

Enter the red, green, and blue values of your target color in the three fields above. The converter converts the RGB triplet to CIELAB and finds the closest Pantone Solid Coated match using Delta E 2000, the modern CIE standard for perceptual color difference. The top eight matches are ranked by similarity, and each shows its HEX approximation and CMYK print equivalent.

What is the most accurate RGB to Pantone converter?+

Accuracy depends on the matching algorithm. Most converters use Euclidean RGB distance or Delta E 1976, both of which produce misleading matches in saturated blues, greens, and purples. This converter uses Delta E 2000 in CIELAB space, which is the current CIE standard and produces perceptually correct matches for every hue region.

Why does my RGB color not match any Pantone exactly?+

Pantone Solid Coated colors are physical ink mixes, and RGB is a screen color model. No RGB triplet corresponds exactly to any Pantone ink, because the Pantone print gamut and the sRGB screen gamut are different volumes of color space. Very saturated RGB colors (pure green, electric blue, vivid magenta) often fall outside the Pantone gamut entirely, so the closest match is visually distant (Delta E 8 to 15 or higher).

Is RGB to Pantone conversion different from HEX to Pantone?+

Mathematically the conversion chain is the same, because every HEX code represents an RGB triplet. The difference is user experience and precision. RGB input allows you to enter three independent channel values with no formatting constraints, which is useful when you have RGB values from a design tool, a database, or a programmatic color calculation. HEX input is faster for codes you have already seen written.

What does the match score mean?+

The score is a linear mapping of Delta E 2000. A Delta E of 0 shows as 100 percent (perfect match), and each Delta E unit reduces the score by about 5 percentage points, reaching 0 at Delta E 20. The score is a design reference, not a production guarantee. Delta E under 3 is typically close enough for design work; under 1 is required for critical brand matching. Above Delta E 10, the match is only loosely related to the original color.

What is the RGB range for Pantone Solid Coated?+

The sRGB channel range is 0 to 255 per channel, which is the standard for all digital RGB input. Values above 255 or below 0 are clamped by this converter. Pantone does not define an RGB range of its own because Pantone colors are physical inks. The RGB approximations you see on each Pantone page are derived from the closest digital representation of the physical Pantone swatch.

Does coated vs uncoated affect the match?+

Yes. This converter matches against Solid Coated (C) only, because C is the most widely used and referenced library. Pantone Solid Uncoated (U) is a separate set of physical swatches with the same code numbers but visibly different colors, because the ink absorbs into uncoated paper differently. If your print job is on uncoated paper, use the Pantone U book to verify the match against your RGB target.

Can I use this converter for brand identity work?+

Yes, as a starting point. Designers translate existing RGB colors into Pantone candidates for brand guidelines, packaging, and print collateral. The top match becomes a starting point for brand specification. Always verify against a physical Pantone chip before finalizing anything critical. RGB values also exist in different color spaces (sRGB, Display P3, Adobe RGB), so the exact color the RGB triplet represents depends on which color space the source values came from. This converter assumes sRGB, the web standard.
